...famed director Jay Roach, whose accolades include both Austin Powers films, and David E. Kelley, producer of "Ally McBeal" insert their characteristic wit and humor to bring out the best in this slightly odd looking comedy. Mystery Alaska's funny roots are evident in this rip-roaring comedy which combines an awful idea with some ingenious humor. The movie takes a while to get started, and after a half an hour of crude jokes about sex and hockey, you begin to wonder if people do anything else in Mystery besides fornicate and smack pucks. This satiric comedy points...
Creator David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal) is no stranger to provocative, zeitgeisty premises, and in theory this slick private-eye series is a Lewinsky-era doozy: privacy-invading, sexy investigations by sexy investigators using high-tech, extra-constitutional means. But he's done little more with it yet than find excuses to get his babe-licious P.I.s into halter tops and hooker outfits, a setup spiced up with Moonlighting-style banter between Gina Gershon and Paula Marshall. To start, they used motion-capture technology to record the movements of a live dancer with digital video cameras. They then used 3-D animation software called Character Studio and 3D Studio Max to map the movements onto their own digital drawings and render the final...
...kiss my skinny white ass." And for once, "skinny" wasn't the problem. "White," rather, reminded us too vividly that Fox had bumped to midseason the heftier black keister of Thurgood Stubbs, animated star of The PJs, in favor of Ally, the half-hour Mini-Me to Ally McBeal and, incidentally, part of the most Caucasian fall lineup in years. It should not have surprised anyone, then, that N.A.A.C.P. president Kweisi Mfume last week issued a similarly spirited directive to the Big Four networks, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC: Put some color back in prime time, or we'll boycott...
