...Giants, though falling to take full advantage of their opponents' inability to hit, were more than a worthy opponent. The turning point of the series didn't come until that last shot off the bat of Willie McCovey hit Bobby Richardson's glove to keep the winning run and 120,859.44 sitting on second base...

...Giant line-up needs no supplementing; if anything it suffers by forcing talented young players (Matty Alou and Willie McCovey) onto the bench. But with Harvey Kuenn hitting well over 370 there seems to be little place for them now. As for M. Mays, who the other day assaulted the New York Mets' little Elio Chacon the way the Giants were assaulting the Mets, he is coming out of a slump which did not prevent him from leading the league with 16 home runs. Teammate Orlando Cepeda is right behind him in that department with 11, leads with 49 runs...

...belting 400 foot shots into the wind, and Willie Mays hardly feels the draft. With Cepeda back at first Harvey Kuenin and Felipe Alou (say it fast and you know a great Jamaican curse) flanking Mays in the outfield, the Giants have Matty Alou (same to you) and Willy McCovey on the bench. For the first time in three years the Giant hopes don't rest on the erratic shoulders of McCovey, and they couldn't look better...

Across from Kuenn stands the question and the answer to the Giants' chances. If first baseman Willie McCovey hits like he hit as a rookie, as he hit last fall in Japan, and as he hit in Phoenix all spring (.422), then rookie Manager Alvin Dark can run for mayor of San Francisco in November. If not, the incumbent has no worries...

Giant pitching is good, and could be extremely good. Sam Jones, Mike McCormick, Jack Stanford, and Billy O'Dell should win 60 games between them. While weaknesses in the second line pitching and the middle of the infield will hurt, a line-up with Kuenn, Mays, McCovey, and Cepeda (in that order) can win day in and day out. With a handful of outstanding rookies and a tough nucleus of reliable stars, San Fransisco has the best combination of youth and experience in the league. Any one of four teams could beat them, but the Giants seem least likely...
