...turned to mystery, then suspicion, as the White House became entangled in an ever widening net of questions. Among the confidential matters Foster was working on when he died was the Clintons' investment in Whitewater, an Arkansas land development launched in 1978 with the Clintons' partners, Jim and Susan McDougal...

Whitewater now seems destined to dog the Clintons throughout this election year. In Little Rock last week, Jim and Susan McDougal, along with Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker, began to stand trial on felony charges brought by independent counsel Kenneth Starr; they are accused of fraud, conspiracy and making or causing to be made false statements to a financial institution. While driving with one of his close friends, future Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker, he managed to beach the car on the dividing strip of North University Street in Little Rock, stopping traffic during rush hour. McDougal was unfazed, chatting with Tucker as though nothing had happened...

LITTLE ROCK: The Whitewater trial of Governor Jim Guy Tucker and two former business associates of President Clinton began Monday with the defense complaining of racial bias and the prosecution accusing the trio of plotting "perfect crimes." Tucker, James McDougal and Susan McDougal are charged with arranging almost $3 million in loans and lying about how they were going to use the money. The trial opened with Tucker's attorneys claiming prosecutors had removed one woman because of her race. Federal Judge George Howard Jr. agreed and reinstated the woman, making the jury nine whites and three blacks. After...
