Welcome to the sitcom from hell, redeemed into a lesson of togetherness. Marvin's Room, the 1991 Scott McPherson play, filmed by Jerry Zaks, is an old-fashioned weepie of noble mien with many bright moments and a superb cast. It's a tonic to see Keaton making sense of sanctity, DiCaprio refusing to sentimentalize a disturbed teenager. The impossible challenge goes to Streep; she's supposed to escort Lee on a forced march from belligerence into family harmony. "How can one sister be so good and the other so bad?" asks Aunt Ruth. The answer: careless writing. The movie...
...stern as he was, Bob came to embrace a wounded mother and her young son. Kit was 16 when she fell for a tall, strapping 18-year-old named Newt McPherson. They got married on Sept. 12, 1942. The day after the wedding, Kit knew she had made a mistake. She says that one morning when she tried to wake McPherson for work, after he had stayed out drinking the night before, he struck her. She left immediately; the couple broke up within days after the marriage. But Kit was already pregnant. On June 17, 1943, almost nine months...

Moyers might well have drawn more telling responses from a group that ranges from well-established poets like Sandra McPherson, Robert Bly and Adrienne Rich to such lesser-known practitioners as Daisy Zamora, Sekou Sundiata and Coleman Barks. But by ignoring specifics--by avoiding the poet's daily business of weighing word against word--he finally divorces most of the poets from their poems. Ideally, when the poet sits down to write he or she is claiming a kinship, however collateral, with Dickinson and Donne, Chaucer and Virgil. What Moyers too often gives us is the poem as self-therapy...
...took such a step. "It's going to be a shot across the fiscal management bow of every other university in the country," says McWhirter, who spoke to sources close to the school's board. The reason Michigan State took the initiative, McWhirter says, is that university President Peter McPherson -- a former Reagan-Bush deputy Treasury secretary -- came from the world of finance and "has been a crusader for strict budgetary accountability. It's a philosophy much closer to market pricing -- and clearly driven by what people are willing to pay, not what it costs to produce...
