...turning a little too red in the 90° heat, weren't they powwowing in German? The answer, indeed, was ja. The scene was the long Whitsunday weekend in Bocklemünd near Cologne, where 2,500 members of West Germany's Western Bund gathered in a meadow to dress up as cowboys, Indians and Civil War soldiers and live the life of the Old West as it really was. Casual spectators were strictly forbidden. Said Hans ("Old Joe") Jäkel, 55, a retired Cologne machinist who has been Grand Marshal of the Bund's annual...

...other side of Haleakala, on the cool uplands above Wailea, on a clear day you can see, if not forever, a dazzling, dappled distance of meadow, mountain and sea. At the 2,000-to 3,000-ft. level, a host of small farms raise a cornucopia of vegetables, fruits and flowers, notably lychee, avocado, guava, the apple-sweet Kula onion and protea, the flower of a thousand exquisite shapes...

Never mind, bankable is bankable, so Ross, straining hard to seem as naive as her little dog Toto, is blown by a snowstorm to Munchkin land. This turns out to be the old New York World's Fair Pavilion at Flushing Meadow, where the Wicked Witch of the East has turned hundreds of juvenile spray-paint vandals into graffiti figures. The yellow brick road leads across the Brooklyn Bridge to the World Trade Center, where Richard Pryor reigns as the Wiz. But before Dorothy gets there, she meets a roarious but cowardly lion (Ted Ross) and a marvelous scarecrow...

After five more hours on the road--we had split up to travel faster--I began to look forward to this gathering immensely, so when I got to Roseburg, Oregon (where you turn east into the Umpqa National Forest to get to White Horse Meadow, my destination) I began to look forward to food, a good sleep, some music and comfort. Roseburg was crawling with hitchhikers, all heading where I was, to this great Sixties type rock concert. Woodstock, here I come. A VW van slowed down, picked me up, and then took another hitcher, and another, and we headed...
