Calling Tripp to testify now is an indication of where Starr's probe stands. Earlier this month, when Lewinsky dumped the loquacious California medical-malpractice lawyer William Ginsburg and hired a pair of Washington sharpies, Plato Cacheris and Jake Stein, many observers assumed it meant she was getting ready to cooperate. If Lewinsky were to testify, Tripp would then be relegated to a mere corroborating witness, appearing only after Monica had spilled to the grand jury. ...summer vacation meant the opportunity to spend quality time with some of my closest friends from back home, many of whom I hadn't seen since last September. But what I was looking forward to the most was our casual, somewhat childish attitudes towards each other. Contrary to life at Harvard, back home we all felt comfortable making stupid conversation and resorting to humor of the lowest common denominator. There are about a hundred of these changes in the course of the 12 minutes the film lasts, and every outfit is as banal as the last. ...there is a lyric in the film that gives the lie to the bravado of the entire girl-power movement. "Look at me," Mulan sings, "I will never pass for/ a perfect bride/ or a perfect daughter/ Can it be/ I'm not meant to play this part?" In the end, however, she substitutes one part for another. And that's one of the limitations of girl power. Its lure is the image of girls kicking ass, being boylike. But how well does it prepare them to be adults in a complex world? "We're struggling to find alternative models...

Thought the Supreme Court's decision to allow "indecency" online meant the Web was safe for porn? Not any more. The Justice Department has told federal prosecutors it's time to stamp out more prurient forms of titillation. "Investigation and prosecution of Internet obscenity is particularly suitable for federal resources," Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder wrote in a June 10 memo to all U.S. attorneys, obtained by TIME's Netly News...
