Jeopardy (MGM) is a frenzied little thriller that allows a lustful killer (Ralph Meeker) to menace a quiet family vacationing in Lower California. When the husband (Barry Sullivan) is accidentally pinned down on a beach by rotting jetty timbers, his desperate wife (Barbara Stanwyck) sets out to find help before the tide comes in. She promptly runs into the desperado, who not only commandeers her car but begins leering at her. Does the wife outwit the bad man? Is the husband saved before the tide comes in? Do the police catch the killer? For this elaborately rigged situation, Jeopardy uses...
...good-looking, good-for-nothing roughneck (Ralph Meeker), he comes among a widow who had married unwisely for love; her two daughters, one beautiful and besought (Janice Rule), the other bright and coltishly adolescent (Kim Stanley); her boarder, an old-maid schoolteacher with an unmatrimonial-minded beau; her next-door neighbor, a middle-aged woman chained to an invalid mother. The roughneck and the beautiful girl fall hard for each other: there is a climactic scene where they dance slowly and sexually, while the other women look on-awed, envious, aroused. ...Ralph Meeker, Paul Newman, Peggy Conklin, Eileen Heckart all seem like real people. Janice Rule as the young lady is indeed both beautiful and confused. Only Kim Stanley, as her younger sister, is a bit unbelievable--she is too often too bold in telegraphing her moods...
...bang-bang-up western and the shootingest Hollywood horse opera in months. It begins with a cagey killer (Robert Ryan) and his flinty pursuer (James Stewart) who is out to collect the $5,000 reward. An old prospector (Millard Mitchell) and a cashiered Union Army officer (Ralph Meeker) have cut themselves in on the reward money as Stewart's partners. Since this is a big Technicolor western, there is also a girl along for the ride, played by Janet Leigh in a becoming boyish blonde hairdo. By the fadeout, the bad man, the prospector and the Army officer...
...meat of action. Shot in the Colorado wastelands, the plot is unfolded almost entirely with the camera rather than with words. A striking exercise in violence, it is a western with real form, rhythm and authentic style. Best sequence: a three-way shooting match between Ryan, Stewart and Meeker up & down a cliff jutting over a raging, impassable river...
