...required by law to deal with its landfill odors when in 1996 it started harnessing energy from burning methane off the landfill to generate electricity. "You have this investment to begin with," says COO Gary Smith. "We wanted a way to capitalize." Today Modern provides the region with 12 megawatts, enough to power about 20,000 homes, and plans to expand to a 35-megawatt facility. In the meantime, Modern has found a market for the plant's by-products. Since 2002 it has channeled the heat produced through insulated pipes toward greenhouses where tomatoes are grown commercially...
...boyish antics may have suggested something else to Paramount. Cruise is 44 now, a star (since Risky Business in 1983) for more than half his life; yet he still relies on the megawatt smile and man-child brio. He should be finding a way to segue to a maturity that is just as appealing, yet less... strange. In other words, Paramount to Tom: Grow...
...ambition, it's important to realize how energy is distributed. Every energy producer - whether coal, nuclear or wind - gets paid a flat rate to produce electricity, all of which is dumped into a central national power grid and distributed through different energy providers throughout the country. Making a single megawatt-hour of electricity from wind, however, is more expensive than one from fossil fuel. So wind farmers sell credits, which are priced to cover the difference in cost and allow them to stay in business. By purchasing these credits, Vail is only ensuring that at least the amount of energy...
Buying wind, it seems, is a complicated venture. Last week the Colorado ski and recreation company Vail Resorts Inc. announced it would purchase 100% of its energy use - roughly 152,000 megawatt-hours a year - from wind farms. But that doesn't mean Vail is dumping its old energy providers. Instead it has purchased "wind power credits" from a Boulder-based company called Renewable Choice Energy, which in turn pays wind farms throughout the country to produce electricity - enough to offset 211 million lbs. of carbon dioxide emissions each year. This purchase makes Vail the second-largest buyer of wind...
...come from coal, the only traditional energy source they have in abundance. Barbara Finamore, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council's China Clean Energy Program, estimates that China's total electricity demand will increase by 2,600 gigawatts by 2050, which is the equivalent of adding four 300-megawatt power plants every week for the next 45 years. India's energy consumption rose 208% from 1980 to 2001, even faster than China's, but nearly half the population still lacks regular access to electricity--a fact the government is working to change. "They'll do what they...
