...done a good job discrediting Loeb, he is worthy of praise for his effort, particularly since this is the New Hampshire primary season, usually the Union Leader's peak power period. The book has quickly become the largest seller in the history of New Hampshire. Both Loeb and Governor Meldrim Thomson have sued Cash for libel, and Loeb's personal history is suddenly a topic of national curiosity...

The state Republican power structure, led by archconservative Governor Meldrim Thompson and right-wing Publisher William Loeb, went all-out to defeat the Democratic upstart. Loeb's Manchester Union Leader frequently assailed Durkin as a carpetbagger* from Massachusetts (he moved to New Hampshire eight years ago). In contrast, those issues were all favored by Thomson's opponent, David Nixon, 42, president of the New Hampshire senate and-since there is no Lieutenant Governor-the second-highest official in the state. What's more, Nixon, no kin to the ex-President...
