...Queen's Jubilee jewels, but it is never spoofy enough to raise a howl or scary enough to raise a hackle. The real danger is an American actress (Inga Swenson), who spurs Holmes's love disinterest. Actress Swenson is so cool that icicles wouldn't melt in her mouth, though words do-it is difficult to know whether she is reading her lines or learning them. Martin Gabel is sepulchrally menacing as Moriarty, but he has a walk-on, duck-off part...

...talk turned to molybdenum, which is not the hardest metal known to man but has the advantage of not even beginning to melt at temperatures up to 4,700°F. Eventually the atom experts decided to put their drilling theories to a test; they constructed a 2-in. cylindrical drill bit of molybdenum, and to their surprise their very first demonstration was a success. With a 5-kw. generator, they heated the face of the bit to 2,190°F, then forced it down against a specimen of hard basalt rock. Like a hot pick thrusting through...

...York is vast, it is tiny as well more provincial than Muncie, Indiana. Stop in one of 3000-plus neighborhood churches some Sunday, and feel the Mad. Ave. tempo melt away. New York is the town where a barber, when you ask for a shave, will tell you that you need a haircut; where a million people dwell within a 3-block radius--smaller than a midwestern village, yet containing all commodities (drugstore, bar, movie, etc.) necessary for life. Some get the jitters, or get lost, one block beyond that circumscribed universe. Others never leave...

...spite of these feeble attempts, The Young Lovers is a real stinker. The director, Samuel Goldwyn Jr. (wonder how he got the job?) has evidently seen Jules and Jim; every time Peter Fonda and Sharon Hugueny melt into each other's arms, the air fills with a familiar kind of harps-and-strings music. It's supposed to convey the impression of joyful undergraduate love, but it only conveys the impression that the scene is taking place in the Waldorf Cafeteria...
