Pilgrim's Way is the gracefully written memoir of John Buchan (Lord Tweedsmuir) who grew up in Scotland, attended Oxford, served in Parliament, and was Governor General of Canada at the time of his death in 1940. A prolific author, he lived as well as wrote about history. His portraits of contemporaries are full of insight. His philosophy of life is both challenging and inspiring and as relevant to today's world as it was to his generation. Not least, his prose is a pleasure to read...
Trussoni is a bit of a fallen angel herself. In 2006 her memoir Falling Through the Earth put her in the upper echelons of the literary heavens, but with Angelology she has voluntarily consigned herself to the infernal realm of the commercial thriller. Angelology is based on a literal interpretation of a passage in Genesis that describes angels interbreeding with human women to produce powerful hybrid beings called Nephilim. Trussoni supposes - and why shouldn't she? - that the Nephilim are still among us, a wealthy, evil élite who secretly guide the affairs of men. It's a killer premise...
There is not much news in Karl Rove's memoir, Courage and Consequence, which is something of a moral triumph for the author. He's written a brace of previous books including the hagiographic memoir My Life with the Saints, which has sold 100,000 copies. Less predictably, after advising on a production about Judas, he became a member of the off-Broadway LAByrinth Theater Company, attending readings and participating in exercises. Says Philip Seymour Hoffman, the Oscar winner and LAByrinth co-founder, referring...
...paintings, which he began producing after a serious motorbike crash in 1994, are on display at Paris' Fondation Cartier, along with videos, objects and installations, in the exhibition "Gosse de Peintre" (The Painter's Kid). The Centre Pompidou is also hosting a Kitano film and TV retrospective, and his memoir, Kitano par Kitano, written with French journalist Michel Temman, has just started gracing Parisian bookstores.
