Philip Caputo's 1977 memoir, A Rumor of War, another excellent and painfully earned book, recalls how he was inspired by John Kennedy's "Ask not what your country can do for you ..." It purports to tell the story of eight Administrations (from Taft's through Ike's) from the homely vantage point of Lillian Rogers Parks, a black maid whose bestselling 1961 memoir is the series' source material. Apart from an early and crippling bout with polio, Parks (Leslie Uggams) led a rather stable life. She met many famous people but played no role in great events...
