He should be spherical (to keep the center of gravity low when he mixes his martinis), have good hands (for hustling his customers at pool) and good feet (for dancing on the tables), not to mention the mind of a philosopher (for dealing with drunks at midnight, and their wives at 3 a.m.) and the soul of a poet (for writing dirty limericks). The Irish obviously have a tremendous cultural advantage in all of these field; William Butler Yeats, sources say, would have made a phenomenal barkeep...

...only things you can order there with more of a kick than the food. And the culturally neuter might want to look into the undeservedly obscure Georgie's on Mass. Ave. near the Law School, which boasts terrific Bloody Marys and an even better bowling machine, not to mention a giant-screen color TV for Monday night football. If you can take the conversation, which often runs to torts, and the inexcusable lack of pizza on the menu, it's definitely worthwhile...

...Talking Heads (former Modern Lovers included, for those who remember, those who care) are all up-and-coming; Firefall cancelled [drat]; Styx the 4th at the Orf; at the Paradise: Southside Johnny like right now or something, Chris Hillman, Sea Level and Mink De Ville coming up, not to mention Charles Mingus and Larry Coryell, and Pheobe Snow, and the Gentle Giant. What is disturbing about this practice is that the cartoons themselves bear no mention that they are part of a Mobil public relations campaign, and most of the papers that run the cartoons make no effort to volunteer that information. When the issue was advertisement by anti-Mobil groups, Herbert Schmertz, Mobil's vice-president for public affairs, wrote: "The public has a right to know who is behind any advocacy effort, and for whom the advocate is speaking. That applies to material from a corporation, or from a group that labels itself as public interest." How quickly they forget...
