...Hamad's insinuations. He was critical of the security checkpoints, but since the city is no longer under Israeli control, why should the crossing into Israel be different from that between the U.S. and Canada, for instance? Hamad also took issue with the Israeli security wall but failed to mention that it was built to stop suicide bombers from crossing and snipers from shooting into Jerusalem. When I was stationed in Bethlehem, the Christian population was thriving, and tourists arrived by the busload all year round. We need to ask what the difference is between then and now. Aron...
...Hamad's Christian friends. Unmentioned was the pressure from Islamic extremists to purge the city of its Christian residents. Christians have been murdered in Bethlehem, families driven into exile and the Church of the Nativity used as a fortress by Islamic gangs. Hamad conveniently didn't note that the security checkpoints did not go up until years of Palestinian suicide bombings left the Israelis no choice. He failed to mention that during the recent peace conference, Palestinians gathered in the tens of thousands to denounce peace and chant "Death to Israel." Muslims and Christians were free to travel throughout Israel and practice their religion in peace until radicals began attacking Israeli civilians. Hamad's need to blame someone for the horrid situation is understandable...

Their extensive memoirs were written in part to contribute to history, but also as a personal defense against future historians. This dynamic - the statesman as historian - would have been a fascinating one for Burrow to explore...
...seeing tremendous excitement and enthusiasm all over the state," New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch said. Chalk it up to high stakes, aggressive organizing, well-known candidates, the lack of an incumbent-not to mention weather so unseasonably fine that a voter might feel almost lucky to be waiting in line outside a voting station...
