...wild thrill. And though the tourist board will tell you otherwise, there are indeed a lot of weirdos here: outcasts and outsiders of every stripe, a lot of them refugees from milder climes where their eccentricities drew stares (Ted Turner and Jane Fonda have a ranch nearby, not to mention the gun freaks, vegans and channelers). Out here, though, these folks are left alone. I like that. Whatever Kaczynski's crimes, if any, the fact he could live so long in his dank hut unmolested and undisturbed is evidence of rare tolerance, I think...
...randomized into Currier House two years ago, in an era when "randomization" was a word filled with fear and being "Quadded" was a fate worse than death. That year, one-eighth of my classmates were plunked into houses they did not mention on their rooming forms. My blocking group of eight did not put down a "Quad-buster" as one of our four choices; we chose the standard Lowell, Eliot, Kirkland and Winthrop. Here is a large addition of diversity (and there are, moreover, varieties of Asians) from those who arrived without fanfare and, above all, without the benefit of preferences. If anything, Asians have been victims of affirmative action, but to consider this obvious event, at which partisans of diversity ought to rejoice, might call attention to the stubborn and unwelcome fact of black underperformance, which needs to be buried...
...SEEMS MUCH CONCERNED ABOUT CHILDREN when the subject is welfare or Medicaid cuts, but mention divorce, and tears flow for their tender psyches. Legislators in half a dozen states are planning to restrict divorce on the grounds that it may cause teen suicide, an inability to "form lasting attachments" and possibly also the piercing of nipples and noses...
...charged controversies, Sharpton's account is self-servingly selective. Take his rendition of the saga of Tawana Brawley, the black teenager whose sensational claims of having been raped by a gang of white men kept New York City on the edge of racial meltdown for months. Nowhere does Sharpton mention his ridiculous allegation that she had been victimized by an Irish Republican Army conspiracy organized in a suburban sheriff's department. Even though Brawley's story has been thoroughly discredited not only by law-enforcement agencies but also by courageous black journalists, Sharpton continues to insist she was telling...
