...German arms merchant who illegally sold a giant drill to Iraq in 1999 has left a gaping hole in Germany's efforts to restrict the export of sensitive military-use technology. A Mannheim court last week sentenced Bernd Schompeter, 59, to five years and three months in jail after ruling that he had broken an export embargo with the drill, which can be used to manufacture cannon capable of firing chemical or nuclear weapons. ...First covered by TIME.comix in 2001, when volume one appeared, you can see improvements even over that fine debut. Primarily Heuet has cut down on the prose and given us more to look at. His highly detailed costumes and backgrounds have the sumptuousness of a Merchant and Ivory movie. This book in particular, with its lovely views of the French seaside, provides much to please the eye. The pictures perfectly compliment the dreamy, poetic text.
