Purpose of the Film Society is to show to a limited group of members, who pay $12 a year to see ten Sunday evening performances, cinemas of esthetic merit which, because of censors or lack of popular appeal, are not exhibited in commercial cinemansions. ...behest of Tennessee's Senator McKellar, himself on the public payroll for 22 years, the Civil Service Commission last week published a 1,500-page survey of jobs outside the merit system which will fall to "deserving" Democrats after March 4. The jobs ranged from Secretary of State to trackwalker on the Government's Alaska Railroad. Obviously this thesis has some merit, though it does not carry quite the impact of originality which its champion claims for it. Anyone's appreciation of classic or even modern literature is conditioned by his sympathy for its social origins; but Mr. Harris forgets, or underestimates, the fact that sympathy is a product of the imagination more than of factual knowledge.
