Could it be that global equity markets are just too irrational to merit the obsessed attention they're enjoying these days? That's the question some observers were asking Friday as indices in Asia and Europe posted gains only to decay again as the day progressed. It was a fittingly wacky end to a week that has seen bourses see-saw with unprecedented volatility. The VIX, Wall Street's leading measure of market volatility and investor fears, briefly scaled 80 points for the first time in its 18-year history Thursday, as stocks slid over recession worries...
...Doon’s desire to help the human race, takes place under, around, and through the city, unveiling the secret escape from the City of Ember. Ronan, who previously earned an Oscar nomination for her supporting role in “Atonement,” has proven her merit once again. Her performance is heart-warming and inspired, and she becomes the shining star of the movie. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast, which includes Bill Murray, Tim Robbins, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste in secondary roles, is disappointing. ...Michael Grunwald's piece on how Washington failed us: I'm neither Republican nor Democrat, and I am disgusted with both [Oct. 13]. Both presidential candidates want to blame Wall Street, and there is surely some merit to that. But the heart of the problem rests with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, two quasi-government corporations. Bitter, sweet, salty, sour, and savory (umami) all have their place on the tongue, and some researchers are now arguing that calcium-sensitive sites merit their place, as well. It makes sense, then, that having more tastebuds corresponds to a greater gustatory response in supertasters. The emerging field of hedonics, the study of gustatory pleasure, is determined to pin down other biological dimensions of taste. Of course, less than 25% of the population become food critics...
...feminist groups over his alleged sexual abuse of stepdaughter Zoilamerica Narvaez during the 1980s. The allegation first surfaced in 1998, but was eventually dismissed by a Sandinista judge without investigation or trial - despite an investigation by the InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights, which determined that the case had merit. In most democracies, the furor would have been enough to sink any political career. But not in Nicaragua, where Ortega - protected by legal immunity and a judicial system stacked with Sandinista judges - has not only survived but thrived, returning to the presidency in 2007 and amassing more power than ever before...
