Quincy immediately set to work to "improve" the students. One of his first "reforms" was the establishment of a new marking system, the Scale of Merit. This system sought to place students in their proper academic positions with mathematical certainty: 8 points for attending class, a loss of 16 points for missing Sunday chapel, etc. Quincy himself took Puritanic glee in toting up the figures weekly. The Scale of Merit, however, proved a dismal failure, for it placed a premium upon attendance and not upon learning. Perhaps the system fitted well with Quincy's preconceptions of the ideal college course...
...choosing the first show, the C.D.F. naturally wanted a festive work of acknowledged merit. It settled on Twelfth Night and engaged the imaginative Herbert Berghof as director. Berghof, in keeping with the festive occasion, decided to turn the play into a "music and dance extravaganza." In Peru, Military Strongman Manuel Odria got the Legion of Merit for running a tight economy. The reason for such friendly gestures was typically stated in Pérez Jiménez' Legion of Merit citation. It commended him for his "spirit of friendship and cooperation" and for his "sound foreign-investment policies"-in a- word, for stability...
...that person and convey that image to everyone else. I have to find the highlight in the song and work up to it-to find the motive for the song and personalize it for each listener." The fool's gold from the songwriters' mines may seldom merit such meticulous attention, but the measure of Felicia's talent is the astonished pleasure of her fans. When dedicated Method Actors Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward caught her at the Bon Soir this summer, they delivered what was for them an accolade: "Why, you're a method singer...
