...barometer of prevailing public opinion but an arbiter of law. Nevertheless, as the Supreme Court of California last February and later the U.S. Supreme Court moved to outlaw capital punishment, Californians at least may feel justified in claiming that the high judges are acting against the popular will. A Mervin Field California Poll disclosed last week that the death penalty is growing rather than receding in popularity. Fully 66% of Californians now favor use of the gas chamber for those who commit serious crimes, while only 24% oppose it and 10% are undecided. That is an increase...

...were the results in California quite as spectacular as the winner-take-all provision made them seem. A week before the primary, Mervin Field's California poll showed McGovern ahead by an astonishing 20%. The poll itself became an issue in the race, perhaps breeding overconfidence in the McGovern ranks, perhaps discouraging Humphrey workers. As it turned out, McGovern won by only 5%-44% to Humphrey's 39%. While the vote reflected a broadening McGovern constituency (see box), he had outspent Humphrey by $2 million to $500,000. Humphrey's advance work was atrocious and his press...

...Fascists. When Reagan promised to clean up the mess at Berkeley in 1966, he won a landslide victory over two-term Democratic Governor Edmund G. Brown. Since then his views have grown progressively tougher-and the voters apparently are still with him. The latest independent statewide poll by Mervin Field shows that Reagan is as popular as when he started...

...during Barry Goldwater's heyday in 1964 that Pollster Mervin Field asked California voters to see themselves as the politicians saw them. The result was a fairly even division. Of those polled, 32% regarded themselves as conservatives, 30% as middle-of-the-roaders and 28% as liberals. When Field recently asked Californians to take another look at themselves, the results reflected a swing to the right. Of the 1,006 questioned in the poll released last week, 42% now see themselves as conservatives and 27% as moderates, while only 24% still feel comfortable with the liberal label...

...outcome was surprising not only because of the April vote but also because two authoritative California polling firms, Don Muchmore's and Mervin Field's, found Bradley ahead into the last week. Field's final report gave Bradley a lead of five points, with Yorty gaining. Muchmore's sampling put Bradley 17 points ahead. Both surveys, however, indicated a large undecided vote. The trouble with any poll involving a Negro candidate, of course, is that many of those interviewed are reluctant to admit to racial prejudice. Some who succumbed to Yorty's argument and their...
