When the editors of the Mesa Tribune in suburban Phoenix jumped into print early with copies of this week's Doonesbury cartoon strip, they knew they would be making news. The object of Artist Garry Trudeau's satire is Evan Mecham, Arizona's outspoken Republican Governor. The strips lampoon controversial remarks Mecham has made since taking office in January, including his description of recall-movement leaders as a "band of homosexuals and a few dissident Democrats."
