After Columbine, West Paducah and Conyers, some schools have turned into citadels, metal detectors at the doors, mesh backpacks required. Not Webster. The doors are open at dawn and left unguarded; 96% of the kids polled this fall by the student newspaper say they feel safe in school. They say the kids get along pretty well, races mix, jocks and geeks hang out together. And yet they will say, if you ask, "Littleton could happen here." Last spring, after Columbine, someone scrawled a bomb threat on the wall of a boys' bathroom. The marginal kids know they are being watched...
...three principal artists of Splashdown clearly have varied musical tastes, experimenting with everything from acid jazz to ambient trip-hop and hard-core guitar riffs. Much of the time, it wasn't pretty; the kids all went where the ball was. They were sprinting, passing, lunging and kicking with abandon, just like the boys. I stood there amazed. A child I hardly recognized as my own hurled herself toward the goal...
...acre range is a magnificent exercise in environmental illusion. The leaves the gorillas are munching are willow, native to the U.S.; the strangler fig is really catalpa, a local species; the understory plant is butterbur, native to Japan; the fallen tree is made out of metal, mesh and layers of epoxy; and a few hundred yards from the recorded sounds of hornbills and monkeys, Latin music blares from a picnic on a sweltering June afternoon...
LIFESAVER Back-country skiers, snowboarders and mountaineers who get buried in avalanches will soon have a new way to stay alive while waiting to be rescued. The AvaLung by Black Diamond Equipment ($200, available in September) is a special mesh vest designed to keep snow from melting around the face and freezing into a deadly ice mask. A tube filters fresh air into the wearer's mouth and then channels warm, moist, exhaled air safely out the back...
