...dealers from all over Europe. In the crush, nearly everyone failed to recognize the artist, Günter Haese, 43, a slender, shy man with an assembly-line haircut and an inexpensive suit. No one, however, could ignore the 27 works on display. Built of watch springs, mesh, tiny cogs and spirals, the small, precisely balanced wire constructions fluttered and danced at the slightest breath. Bearing cryptic names, such as Hermit, Flirt and L'état c'est moi, they represented virtually all of Haese's sculptural output...
...Scala's Claudio Abbado, 34, is a stern, urgent pursuer of the long musical line, a Toscanini-like stickler for both fine-mesh detail and overall coherence. Imperious and intensely concentrated, he spurs an orchestra on with a clean, incisive beat, often achieving a surging pulse and crackling inner tension. He excels with the original texts of operas, giving them what one critic calls an "electric-shock treatment...

...pretty numbing. The Lawyers has not so much been written as it has been compiled; the reader can all but see Mayer doggedly arranging his 3-by-5 index cards so that not one piece of information escapes. The result is an intrusively disjointed style. Paragraphs often do not mesh; chapters hardly ever do. The failing was no doubt exacerbated by the fact that parts of chapters appeared in five magazines as varied as Harper's, Redbook and TV Guide. Still, Mayer needs an editor; he ingests better than he digests. On occasion, he even goofs those facts. Example...
