...campaign by the tobacco industry left its mark on those voters who were paying attention; just as the health-insurance industry recast Clinton's health-care initiative four years ago as a bureaucratic monster, the tobacco industry successfully reframed the legislation as a Big Government, big-spending, tax-hiking mess. But that effort alone could not have worked if a lot of politicians had not sat down and done the math and found that the poll numbers did not add up the way they had long expected. In the months leading up to the midterm elections, when only the party...

...real women, as Mitsubishi Motors evidenced two weeks ago with its record $34 million payment to women on the assembly line). It's also true that women are joining together for their own, big-draw rock tours and that we now have "girl power," that sassy, don't-mess-with-me adolescent spirit that Madison Avenue carefully caters to. So yes, the women's movement changed our individual lives and expectations, and young women today acknowledge this. A hefty 50% of those from ages 18 to 34 told the pollsters in the TIME/CNN survey that they share "feminist" values...

...American debut at Houston's Alley Theatre. It is a startling theatrical discovery: an impassioned social drama that is as far as one can imagine from the more personal, lyrical style that Williams introduced a few years later in The Glass Menagerie. The earlier play is something of a mess--more than three hours long, with too many characters and subplots, overwrought melodramatics and snippets of dialogue that sound like, well, bad Tennessee Williams (Girl to Guy: "Why don't you ever open the door you're hiding behind?"). But in Nunn's taut, forceful staging, the work is more...

...wing dramatists of the era as Clifford Odets. But he must have sat through quite a few Warner Bros. prison films of the '30s as well. Not About Nightingales is paced like a movie, with short scenes that skip willy-nilly from warden's office to cell block, from mess hall to prison yard. The warden (played with fine, greasy intensity by Corin Redgrave, Vanessa's brother) is a sadistic dictator with no redeeming features. The convicts include a bullet-headed tough guy who organizes a hunger strike (James Black); a sympathetically rendered homosexual called Queenie (Jude Akuwudike...

...center of the Year 2000 mess is fairly simple. In what's proving to be a ludicrously shortsighted shortcut, many system programmers set aside only two digits to denote the year in dates, as in 06/15/98 rather than 06/15/1998. Trouble is, when the computer's clock strikes 2000, the math can get screwy. Date-based equations like 98 - 97 = 1 become 00 - 97 = -97. That can prompt some computers to do the wrong thing and stop others from doing anything...
