...Modest Messiah. Despite such latent opposition, Ben Bella is counting on the turbaned peasant masses, along with the popular national army of enigmatic No. 2 man, Colonel Houari Boumedienne, to keep him in power. Ben Bella's immediate problem is reviving the economy, and last week, on the eve of the presidential vote, he announced a timely boost from the Soviet Union-a $100 million loan to Algeria. Although disbursement details had yet to be worked out on paper, Russia thus becomes Ben Bella's second most important helper after France, which has promised up to $700 million...

...fighting Zionism since he was old enough to grow a beard. Grandson of a Hungarian immigrant who helped build Mea She'arim in the 19th century, Blau learned as an article of faith that the Jews had been dispersed from ancient Israel for their sins. Since only the Messiah could re-establish Israel, Blau naturally looked upon the efforts of Chaim Weizmann to set up a secular Jewish state as nothing less than blasphemy...

Classical Jam Session. This season big-name musicians performing at the festival's full-dress evening productions began to treat the chamber-music series as a sort of classical jam session. Thomas Schippers, who conducted the Spoleto Messiah, stopped by to play piano duets with a series regular, John Browning. Last week Browning backed up U.S. Conductor Robert La Marchina (Traviata), who was up early for the sake of a tuneful Rachmaninoff piano-cello sonata. What's more, the musicians' enthusiasm for the series seems to be shared by an Italian concert public long uninterested in chamber...

...person and work of Jesus emerges." This person was a prophetic rabbi who taught the imminence of the Kingdom of God and who dared to act in God's place by warning of the need for repentance. The Marburgers deny that Jesus explicitly claimed to be the Messiah, although Dinkier and Käsemann argue that he was conscious of his unique mission from God. It was in the light of the Resurrection-an event that Marburgers exclude from study as an event beyond the comprehension of scientific history-that the early church saw him as Messiah...
