...crew are treach, which is short for treacherous and slang for what a decade ago would have been called superfine. Grandmaster favors leathers, tip to toe, and has FLASH spelled out in lightning-bolt letters on the back of his jacket. Mr. Ness, of the Furious Five, favors metal studs, while his compatriot, Melle Mel, currently opts for fur. This is work wear, not street clothing, but Melle Mel knows what message they are putting across. "It gives you a more dominant, primitive look. We dress like this because in a lot of ways people expect us to. The whole...
...were built to operate at 9% greater thrust than those of the first orbiter, Columbia, when the throttle is fully opened. Realizing that this extra power would vibrate the spacecraft more violently, NASA engineers at the Marshall Space Flight Center made a design change. They ordered reinforcement of the metal piping that carries hot, gaseous hydrogen fuel into the small chamber where the engines are first fired up and begin revving to their full 480,000 lbs. of thrust...
...modification took the form of a sleeve that was brazed, or soldered, around the pipes. Presumably, the added metal would have protected the fuel lines from chafing against other parts inside the crowded engine. After the brazing, however, the pipes became so rigid that they developed hairline cracks during test firings, allowing the highly combustible fuel to escape. Such leaks during a flight could cause a calamitous flash fire...
...shaky play--in which both Jim Lubowitz and Boyum were extended to five game contests--the Crimson qualified all six of its competitors for semifinal play. A Harvard player won each division, and the Crimson finished 14 1/2 points ahead of a second-place Tiger team, bringing so much metal back to Cambridge that "we could melt them down and be rich," according to John Dinneen. Boyum, Jernigan and Jackson were also named to the 10-man All-American squad, while Lubowitz and Co-Captain Geordie Lemmon made the second team...
Moreover, there is an interesting give-and-take between Stella's recent paintings and his prints. They cannibalize one another, in a way. His latest series, the black-and-white "Swan Engravings," is printed from etched magnesium sheets that include the offcuts from his huge metal-relief paintings. Butted together like a big collage, these fragments-some ready etched with existing textures, others reworked-provide an inordinately rich field of arcs and patterns. The conjunction of Stella and his master printer Kenneth Tyler promises to change everyone's sense of what printing can do. -By Robert Hughes
