...names go, Amazon is a perfect choice. (Not least because its ticker symbol, AMZN, is a license-plate version of how the stock has performed.) The wild Amazon River, with its limitless branches, remains an ideal metaphor for a company that now sells everything from power tools to CDs, and is eagerly looking for new areas of expansion. It's possible to argue that Bezos didn't master much more than an evolution of commerce, replacing old-fashioned stores with a centralized sales and shipping center. But even that one change, he notes, grabbing a favorite word, is "huge...

...right to tailor the opening screen, Gates said, "That's like saying you have a product called TIME magazine, but one distributor gets to rip out ads, and another one rips out some articles and puts in new ones." Gates' logic in this case is faulty because of the metaphor he selected. The Windows operating system is akin to the printing press rather than to TIME magazine. Speaking of programs, one of [The Artist]'s favorite films is The Matrix--the sci-fi thriller in which the human race is trapped inside an oppressive computer simulation. [The Artist] frequently uses the movie as a metaphor--especially when he talks about the music industry. Says [The Artist]: "People aren't supposed to go into the studio to make music thinking about 'How will this look in the video?' That's a matrix. That's dangerous to me. People shouldn't have to ask permission to record with other artists. That's a matrix...
