...Bette's show follows the five-year run of Celine Dion's A New Day. That elephantine extravaganza, staged by ex-Cirque du Soleil director Franco Dragone, submerged the singer in gigantic sets and CGI effusions: rolling clouds, meteor showers, shooting stars. Midler jokes that she has come to "the only city that could teach Kraft about cheese" because of "the sh-tload of money they're payin' me." There's plenty of money lavished on the production too: $10 million (as she mentions three or four times during the evening), and it boasts some luscious videographic effects...

...surface of Mars, the Moon, Mercury and other Solar System bodies come from about four billion years' worth of this sort of thing. Earth has had plenty of collisions too; it's just that erosion, continental drift and vegetation have erased or hidden most of them. Not all, though: Meteor Crater, in Arizona, was blasted out some 50,000 years ago by an asteroid about the same size as 2007 WD5. A much bigger object, a few miles across, is thought by many scientists to be the reason the dinosaurs died out some 65 million years...

...August nights, stars fall out of the sky in meteor showers while young people are gunned down at random on the playground, on the stoop or on U.S. 26 in Portland, Ore., where a 29-year-old man was shot on Aug. 11 after merging into another driver's lane. Tempers blister; discipline runs thin. We've had summers of riots, of stalkers and serial killers, of orange alerts and Amber alerts, West Nile and wildfires. This August brings familiar fears and fresh ones, the storms now pacing offshore with disarming names like Flossie and Erin; we know...

...offering an optimistic outlook on the band’s present and future. Dinosaur Jr.’s “Beyond” is remarkably good considering their lengthy sabbatical. We can only hope that they release another album before the next life-ending meteor hits Earth, and that it won’t suck as much as “The Lost World.” —Reviewer Joshua J. ...chases through the desert, exploding cars, and intense silences make the film a heart-stopping thriller more than a gross-out horror movie. Additionally, McLean offers the American audience extraordinary footage of this vast and untamed area of Western Australia. Wolf Creek, a park at the top of a meteor crater, is one of the fantastic shots in the panoply of natural beauty the movie shows. The acting of the trio of teenagers is certainly convincing, though nothing exceptional. Their roles—fun loving youngsters who get themselves in trouble—have been seen in everything from...
