...would the draft work without the 2-S? The names of all men of eligible age would be put in a large hat, and that frowsy, grandmotherly creature, the Clerk, would withdraw as many names as General Hersey suggests. A simple lottery -- it is the only equitable method. Ideally, the selection could be made but once a year, thereby guaranteeing the non-selected twelve months of security. But under war conditions, man-power needs fluctuate erratically, and more frequent lotteries would no doubt be needed. Still, it would be possible to continue the 1-S deferment, providing most...

Though minor variations are still being tested, all investigating surgeons agree that the basic method has clear advantages for many patients. Compressing the stump and wound area in an instant cast prevents excessive swelling, which often used to cause loss of tissue and muscle strength. Not only does the patient feel far less pain: spared weeks of complete immobility, he is less likely to develop bed sores or other complications of confinement. Psychologically, the method works wonders because patients do not spend weeks feeling mutilated and despondent. Since rehabilitation begins within 24 hours, the amputee has no time...

The ordinary method of casting is to pour the metal into ingot molds to harden, strip away the mold, reheat the ingot and roll it into semifinished shapes. Continuous casting eliminates these cumbersome steps. A ladle atop a tower pours white-hot steel into a 2-to-4-ft-deep oscillatfhg copper-lined mold. As the mold bottom is withdrawn, an unbroken billet of barely crusted steel creeps down through cooling water sprays...

At its best, Losers is a sluggish, stream-of-concupiscence exposition of what Sartre called nausea. The flipster fictioneers have treated this theme so often that the method has become standardized: spit in their shoe, serve it to you. Novelist Cohen is all spit and no polish. His anti-hero is a Canadian writer who has had a homosexual affair with a Member of Parliament, who himself slept with the writer's wife. Both politician and wife...
