...absolute egalitarian. Any society has to have rewards and punishments for appropriate behaviors so that's almost bound to produce inequality because some people will behave in ways in which society values and thus reap rewards. The usual utopian method is to use sanctions, some type of pressure to induce appropriate behavior. I find the use of economic sanction much more attractive. If everyone received the same hourly wage, and the only source of "Inequality was how hard you worked, then I wouldn't feel a bit bad about that. But I take John Rawls's (professor of Philosophy), position...
...earlier this year, the U.S. Olympic Committee announced that the U.S. would no longer choose its crew team by the boatload. Olympic coach Harry Parker, who had carved out a well known niche for himself in U.S. rowing circles with his coaching exploits at Harvard, threw out the old method of selecting infact the best U.S. eight for the Olympics. Instead Parker brought in the individual selection process, the system that had made East Germany and New Zealand centers of power in the rowing world. Parker and the U.S. Olympic Committee, discouraged by the steady downhill slide of U.S. rowing...
Menstrual extraction is essentially a vacuum-aspiration method in which the fertilized egg, if present, and the uterine lining are withdrawn by means of a tube inserted through the cervix. It differs significantly, however, from similar procedures performed in clinics in New York and other states where abortion is legal. Vacuum aspiration, as usually done, requires dilation of the cervix under local anesthesia. Menstrual extraction requires little or no dilation in most cases. Instead, a thin (diameter: 4 mm.), flexible plastic tube, or cannula, is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus, and most of the uterine lining...
...however, it is becoming medically respectable; more and more physicians are studying it as a possibly practical method of avoiding the legal and physical hardships of abortions done later in pregnancy. Dr. Julius Butler of the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle has performed nearly 100 extractions in the past several months, as has Dr. Edward Stim in New York. The procedure is also being done at Los Angeles County Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, Calif., and at several abortion facilities in New York...
...dating technique was conceived by Chemist Jeffrey Bada of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography while he was trying to date some fossil-laden sediment from the ocean floor. The standard method for determining the age of fossils is the so-called carbon 14 clock, which is based on the ratio of ordinary carbon atoms to atoms of the radioactive isotope carbon 14 found in the specimen. The carbon 14 atoms decay at a known rate and are not replenished after the creature dies; thus the proportion of ordinary carbon to carbon 14 slowly increases. But the carbon clock only works...
