...more people started using RealtyTrac data to understand the downturn, a backlash took hold, largely because of the company's method of counting the three steps of foreclosure separately; the numbers, critics said, were wildly inflated. One of the protests came from Kathi Williams, director of the Colorado Division of Housing, who in 2007 publicly called RealtyTrac's numbers--which put Colorado near the top of the list of states with foreclosure problems--"ridiculous and irresponsible." "It was devastating Colorado in terms of consumer confidence and mortgage lending into the state," she says. The Mortgage Bankers Association, which releases well...
...politics since the 1940s - Richard Nixon worked the phones for his successful 1946 run for the U.S. House of Representatives - automated dialing and message playback weren't perfected until the late 1980s. Since then, thanks to improved technology and decreased cost, the campaign tactic has become the leading method to reach voters. In fact, the Pew Research Center found that nearly two-thirds of American households in battleground states like Ohio and Florida received robo-calls in the final weeks of the 2006 midterm elections, with some voters receiving as many as nine calls...
...nothing to do with us. They embodied a chaos that America didn't want to acknowledge or be a part of. Mole-men are creatures of pure enlightenment. They read Voltaire and Rousseau. They championed reason and logic long before the surface world did, they took on the scientific method. And they are really the foundational, dare I say grounding, principals upon which our middle class, merchant-based democracy rests. They are the anti-hobos. They have slime dripping from their bodies, sure, and the smell of their saliva is very specific. Yes, they occasionally eat their own young...
Fortunately, scientists are figuring out ways to fish sustainably. One method is a quota system that guarantees individual fishermen or cooperatives a prearranged share of the total catch for, say, Alaskan halibut. These catch shares eliminate the incentive to overfish. And a recent study in Science found that catch shares can halt fishery collapses--defined as fish populations falling to 10% of historic highs--and even reverse the trend over time. "It's truly a win-win situation," says Steven Gaines, a marine biologist at the University of California at Santa Barbara and one of the study's co-authors...
...featured in the Whiteread exhibit. Instead, they are physical structures, and perhaps should not be cut so easily from their context, stripped of their contents, and placed together in a museum. And although “Place (Village)” succeeds in suggesting a sense of melancholy, the method feels overdone. The dollhouses immediately bring to mind images of deserted Disneylands, Lilliputian worlds, and models for gated suburban housing communities. While the art is beautiful, it fails to strike the viewer in a more significant way, resulting in a pointed absence of emotion that stems from the work?...
