Despite this evil-smelling State record Congress was determined to clamp a similar system down on all Federal Reserve member banks, make it optional with nonmember State banks. It was this arbitrary method of forcing big banks to stand sponsor for little banks that outraged Manhattan bankers. Big State banks in New York talked covertly of seceding from the Federal Reserve System rather than submit to such a levy. Even big national banks might exchange their Federal charters for State charters to escape from the Reserve. Such a withdrawal on a large scale might well wreck the whole Federal Reserve...
...years, still engages the attention of cinema engineers though most major producers are skeptical about using it except on rare occasions. From du Pont and M. I. T. engineers is soon expected an announcement that may revolutionize color pictures. Whether or not Technicolor's "three-component"' method is sufficiently perfect to make as good pictures of real people as it does of cartoons, whether it will be sufficiently appealing to make up for its expense, are two of the questions which Hollywood will be glad to have answered by the Whitney investment. Honors for Quakers. Swarthmore's aims under President Aydelotte were the same as those of the other pioneers in liberalized college training-Harvard, Princeton, Reed College, Smith. But I salute them as younger comrades, and with some sense of priority." Though he has been actually working on Men of Good Will for only twelve years, he has been preparing for it since 1905. Of the 65-odd characters introduced in this first volume, few are related, many do not even meet. As each chapter carries...
...judged from newspaper accounts, the continual friction at this estimable Manhatten institution is a product of the unfortunate interaction of students with a prepossessing desire to flight valiantly and noisily for any cause whatsoever, meddling Boards with a duty, and a University administration believing in the sledgehammer method of maintaining complacency. There is of course something to be said for the harsh treatment awarded the pacifists. They were so far as can be learned intent only on advertising the fact that they had opinions, without actually caring much about the opinions themselves, They interrupted the public peace of mind without...
