Though there have been frequent articles urging the study of the problem of drinking, to my knowledge no Methodist publication has ever counseled "appropriate drinking" or seriously challenged the "ethos of abstinence" that presently exists within the church membership. Methodists, together with many who are not Methodists, are alarmed by the uncritical acceptance of the use of alcoholic beverages in our highly mechanized and mobile society.
