...There is a momentary pause while water and carbon monoxide combine to form methyl alcohol. As the synthesis proceeds the music turns into a syncopated Cakewalk, the dance of ethyl alcohol. . . . The atoms hesitate, swaying and staggering about, intoxicated by the motions they have discovered. . . . The chemist awakens and rushes to the centre of the stage...

...start with derivatives of coal. All end, by means of different patented processes, with a substance called methyl methacrylate. This can be molded into lenses, rods, sheets or odd shapes. It is transparent to ultraviolet light as well as to the whole visible spectrum. It is lightweight, slightly flexible, can endure pounding, resists corrosion. It is softer than glass and scratches easily. But it can be repolished to its original brilliancy and translucency...

...Pittsburgh meeting of the American Chemical Society last September, Dr. Harry Robert Dittmar of the du Pont Research Laboratories described "Pontalite," a new plastic known chemically as methyl methacrylate polymer, as clear as optical glass, only half as heavy as common glass, flexible, non-shattering (TIME, Sept. 21). Last week du Pont scientists in Manhattan demonstrated that a pretzel shaped length of Pontalite could conduct light, carry it around bends as a cable carries electricity. A flashlight was held close to one end of the twisted plastic tube. The other end of the tube shone brightly...

...company. In that year the heirs turned it over to the University of Rochester. In 1930 the old building was ruined by fire and Ward's moved into a four-story brick building which it rented from American Chicle Co. Among the pungent odors of formaldehyde and methyl alcohol, the smell of Chiclet chewing gum is still discernible. Most of the building is drab and dirty-windowed, but the administration offices, including that of President Dean L. Gamble, are cheerfully decorated in brown and tan. Bulky minerals and meteorites are kept in the cellar bones in bins...

...Pontalite" is a new plastic, known chemically as methyl methacrylate polymer, which is as clear as optical glass, only half as heavy as common glass, flexible, non-shattering, able to withstand tensions of over four tons per square inch. It can be sawed, cut, drilled, polished, cast into molds. "The transparency, brilliance, strength and permanence of Pontalite are unusual, and the absence of color permits fabrication into delicate tinted shades."-Dr. Harry Robert Dittmar of E. I. du Pont de Nemours...
