RAZA's constitution pays tribute to its Chicano roots but emphasizes Latino solidarity. We, the members of Harvard-Radcliffe RAZA, determined to define our Mexican and Latino roots in the American political and social context, identify ourselves as Chicanos; asserting our individuality, we also declare our conviction that we are unique and distinct as a group and a people. From this collective realization, our aspirations originate. We wish to promote the objectives of Chicanos throughout the entire world, most especially at Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges. We encourage Harvard and Radcliffe to provide greater opportunities to all Chicano and Latino students...
Sadly, the empty tables at Baja Mexican Cantina do not testify to the fact that it succeeds where Harvard Square's Border Cafe fails. Perhaps this is in reality another nod in Baja's favor. Located in the increasingly yuppified South End, Baja benefits from decor that is unabrasively funky. The windows and the bar are framed by red plastic chile lights, sombreros grace the walls and bright green cactus sculptures are sunk into cavities in the walls. Triangular flags pushing tequila brands are a tribute to kitsch, but the gestalt works well, set off under a trendy corrugated...
...option that remains flavorful and coherent. Chile rellenos ($9.95) sound unusual as well, advertised as Anaheim and Poblano peppers stuffed with shredded chicken, cheese, sun-dried tomato and pumpkin puree, a combination that dares to depart from the norm. Baja also creates an entirely new form of fusion, a Mexican-style pizza with a tortilla crust, covered by black bean puree, and a selection of toppings ranging from grilled anaheim peppers, grilled corn and jack cheese to spicy ground beef with enchilada sauce or charred vegetables with queso blanco and ranchero sauce...
...office bomb at the time of its release, Touch of Evil has nevertheless been heralded as one of the masterpieces of the noir genre. Charlton Heston plays Ramon Miguel "Mike" Vargas, a Mexican narcotics investigator embroiled in a shady murder investigation just on the other side of the border. Heading the investigation is Captain Hank Quinlan, played by a padded and bloated Welles. When Quinlan's abuse of power proves too great an affront to Vargas' moral sensibilities, he soon involves both himself and his newlywed American wife, played by a feisty Janet Leigh, in the cutthroat bordertown brawl between...
After much thought, I've discovered that learning Spanish and studying the history of Mexico are purely academic pursuits, not excuses to impress women. This girl piqued my interest in Mexican culture because she was Mexican herself, not so much because she talked about Mexico or Mexicans particularly. It was just that after meeting her, I recognized that even though Harvard has a healthy Latino population, as well as courses on Latin American culture, I knew nothing of that culture and sincerely wanted to learn. In other words, that girl was the alpha or the catalyst to my interest...
