Nearly 100 people were killed in fighting as peasant rebels seized four towns in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas on New Year's Day. Announcing that their struggle was "for work, land, housing, food, health care, education, independence, freedom, democracy, justice and peace," the Zapatista Army of National Liberation, composed largely of Indian descendants of the Maya, declared war on the government of President Carlos Salinas.
