...Hamburger Hill, the site in May 1969 of one of the most appalling battles of the war. Dave was there. He was in enough places to be shot twice. When he got home in 1971, they popped him full of Thorazine. He wound up in Veracruz taking a Mexican passport, which he uses to this day. Out of Danang the road snaked north along the coast through emerald country, through two-cow towns with broken coolers brimming with hot soft drinks, mangy dogs sulking in the shade. Some of the most physically beautiful people on earth glided by on bicycles...

...similar to their American counterparts. However, some things provide sharp reminders that this is a foreign country. The food isn't terribly strange—kebabs, hamburgers, and open-faced, toasted subs called zapiekanki are popular—but Chinese food is generally regarded with suspicion and distaste, and Mexican food is unheard of. In the U.S., passing on a two-lane highway is a skill; here, it's a way of life, and darting in and out of the opposite lane is not at all unusual. There's also money to be found in France: as well as campaigning vigorously to convince major French companies to contribute, Loyrette has created a circle of young donors that is attracting...

But in America, where most people hail from somewhere else, that kind of blood-and-soil patriotism makes no sense. There is something vaguely farcical about conservative panic over Mexican flags in Los Angeles when Irish flags have long festooned Boston's streets on St. Patrick's Day. Linking patriotism too closely to a reverence for inherited tradition contradicts one of America's most powerful traditions: that our future shouldn't be dictated by our past...
