Secretary Meyer began his political career in 1892 as a member of the Massachusetts Legislature, being Republican speaker of the Lower House from 1894 to 1897. At the time of the Paris Exposition in 1898, he was chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Commissioners. President McKinley appointed him Ambassador to Italy in 1905 and later Ambassador to Russia, which position he resigned to enter President Roosevelt's cabinet as Postmaster-General. While in the diplomatic corps Mr. Meyer was made a Chevalier of the Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus by the Italian Government, and of Alexander Nevsky by Russia. He was also honored by Japan with the Cross of the Rising Sun.
