Verdi: II Trovatore (Soprano Joan Sutherland, Mezzo Marilyn Home, Tenor Luciano Pavarotti, Baritone Ingvar Wixell, National Philharmonic Orchestra, London Opera Chorus, Richard Bonynge conductor, London; 3 LPs). Having come only recently to the roles of Leonora and Manrico, Sutherland and Pavarotti will undoubtedly have additional things to say about them in the future. For now, it can be said that this is a bella voce album of the first order. Devotees of the Leontyne Price-Placido Domingo set, or Price-Richard Tucker, or especially the old Zinka Milanov-Jussi Björling classic-all much more dramatically vivid-may safely...
...Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, former Wunderkind of European opera. Ponnelle attired his Electra in a red fright wig and managed the considerable feat of making Soprano Carol Neblett look less than gorgeous. Electra may be a mixed-up lady; she does not have to be a visual horror. As Idamante, Mezzo Maria Ewing sang with enough splendor to suggest that the gods had blessed her early and often. Unhappily, she had been garbed too boyishly for the youth capable of slaying a sea monster and making women swoon...
Italian Actress Marilu Tolo took a crash course in English in Los Angeles and( is now speaking it-with brio-in a Greek drama on the island of Corfu. Tolo is on the set of The Greek Tycoon, the saga of a shipping magnate (Anthony Quinn) who chucks his mezzo-soprano mistress (Tolo) in order to marry the widow of an assassinated U.S. President (Jacqueline Bisset). All fantasy, of course. Tolo (pronounced Taw-lo) described her part as that of "a famous opera singer, a tempestuous, explosive character" who is "not Maria Callas." If there is any resemblance...
...Consul lives by its Magda, the woman who batters her heart and soul day after day at the consul's office in search of a visa, and who in the end commits suicide. Menotti has chosen her wisely. Marvellee Cariaga, of the San Diego Opera, has a lustrous mezzo voice, and her ability to convey Magda's growing agony is harrowing...
