...stage was bare, the costumes were rehearsal-type togs in grey, white and black. "If you combine sumptuous sets and costumes with Mahler," explains MacMillan, "you get something like jam on jam." A tenor and a mezzo-soprano sang the vocal parts from opposite sides of the proscenium, while onstage dancers representing such allegorical figures as Youth, Beauty and Everyman traced a melange of MacMillan movements that seemed to draw equally on classical, modern and Chinese dance styles...

...have been planned as the Big Romantic Conclusion, but it was the weakest and most disappointing part of the program. For the first time the full resources of the HRO were deployed, and they were unwieldy. Ensemble was generally bad, and the orchestra rarely got below a non-commital mezzo volume which sapped the climaxes of their drama and surprise. The typically aloof wind section was adamantly sharp throughout, as if they were under no obligation to listen to the strings. ...dippy deb and bringing down the house night after night in the funniest show on Broadway: Peter Shaffer's Black Comedy. Vanessa was in Hollywood, playing Queen Guinevere in her first cinemammoth: a $17 million movie version of Broadway's Camelot, in which she sings in a musky mezzo and looks like a rain-washed daffodil in a fire-green Sussex meadow. On April 10, they will both take a day off to celebrate the climax of the Redgrave year in cinema. They will appear together at the annual Oscar awards ceremony, where for the first time since 1940, when...
