They should have saved their money. Last week, officials at the National Cancer Institute released the results of two large studies designed to put the benefits of beta-carotene supplements to the test. One followed 22,071 doctors who for 12 years took either 50 mg of beta carotene or a placebo every other day. Another involved 18,314 smokers, ex-smokers and asbestos workers. Not only did beta carotene produce absolutely no measurable health benefits, but the study of smokers had to be halted early because beta carotene seemed to be making the rate of death from cancer...
High points on this disc include the"Cannonball" Adderly's mournful ballad "Mercy,Mercy, Mercy," and the four tracks by Booker T.and MG's (the only band that reallydeserves the label as `the hardest working band inshow biz'): "Green Onions" (which was named whenbass player Lewis Steinberg was asked to think ofthe funkiest thing he could), the molasses-thick"Hip Hug-Her," the ghetto-blues soundtrack to the1969 movie Uptight, "Time is Tight" and"Hang `Em High," an organ-driven remaking of thetheme song for the Clint Eastwood spaghettiwestern of the same name...
...high camp value of a Booker T. and the MG'sremake of an Eastwood-Western theme is maintainedfor the duration of the unflinchingly retro surfdisc, a collection of surfer instrumentals thatwere released between '60 and '63. Like all thebest that camp has to offer, this disc is morethan just an amusement item: the burning guitarwork and unstoppable rhythms that mark classicssuch as the Cantay's "Pipeline" and the Surfaris'"Wipeout" (check out those killer bongos!) serveas the backbone for this disc. The two tunes bysurf-guitar master Dick Dale are predictablystrong, as Dale deftly powers his way through histrademark, riff...
Toxic effects of iodide from doses of this order of magnitude given over relatively short periods of time are extremely unlikely. We know from clinical experience that toxic effects of iodide are not observed with doses of 100 mg of iodide per day given to children over a course of years. Iodide goiter has been observed to occur only following daily does of several hundred milligrams of iodide administered for years, a fact which indicates that it is desirable to have a ceiling on the doses used for prophylactic purposes...
...March 14, 1988, Aller signed his first consent form at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and became a subject for Phase 1 of Developmental Processes in Schizophrenic Disorders. Twice a month he received a 12.5-mg injection of the antipsychotic drug Prolixin Decanoate. The substance took three months to take effect, but the results were miraculous. "Everything disappeared," Aller says. Gone were the space aliens, his grandmother's ghost, the pipe bombs, the sniper...
