...windfall lies in its geographic position. The only trustworthy Soviet satellite in the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria is bordered by relatively independent Rumania, maverick Yugoslavia, and two NATO member states, Greece and Turkey. Expanding Soviet interest in the nearby Middle East and Mediterranean has given this 43,000-sq. mi. enclave new strategic importance. Although the Kremlin is so confident of Bulgarian loyalty that no Russian troops are stationed there, the Soviets have deployed "Frog" and "Skud" ground-missile installations, which are manned by Bulgarians...
...Ryan died shortly thereafter, and the Democratic Party chose Abzug as its candidate. Ryan's widow Priscilla immediately entered the race for her husband's seat on the Liberal ticket, and a bitter race was on. Ryan charged that Abzug is "not just a zero; she's a mi-nus." "Mickey Mouse," she said, "can do better." In return, Abzug claimed that her opponent had "no qualification for office," and was conducting a campaign of "vendetta and vindictiveness." The voters apparently agreed with Bella: they sent Abzug to Washington for a second term...
...fate of a nation of merely 3,000,000, with a land mass of hardly 26,000 sq. mi., may seem like too trivial a matter for the world's concern these days. But we made peace, prosperity and independence viable for 22 years-until Russian imperialism made a shambles of it. Is it asking too much to want this again...
India, which captured the most territory in December, made a major concession in agreeing to return some 5,100 sq. mi. of Pakistani territory-all except a few strategic salients in Kashmir. Despite this good-will offering, India failed to win any firm concessions from Bhutto on the Kashmir question, which has so long poisoned relations between the countries. Pakistan maintains that the future of the predominantly Moslem state (pop. 4,600,000) should be determined in a plebiscite. India, which holds that Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India in 1947 is legal and final, wants to have...
SUNSHINE. Theoretically, the sun's energy ought to be usable, but no one is sure how best to collect sunshine and transform it into power. In answer, Aden and Marjorie Meinel of the University of Arizona have proposed a "solar farm" that would cover 5,500 sq. mi. of desert with rows of black steel bands. These would absorb the sun's heat and send it to large storage "batteries" of molten salt, which would power turbine generators. Cost of building a 3,000-kw. demonstration plant: $10 million. Despite the amount of land that such projects would...
