...iconoscope resembles a big electric light bulb with a long neck. The bulb part is 8 in. in diameter, the whole 16 in. long. Inside are, in order from bulb to butt, 1) an ordinary motion picture camera lens which focuses on 2) a 5x4 in. sheet of thin mica. The mica is coated with microscopic particles of a secret light-sensitive material (3,000,000 particles. Dr. Zworykin computes). In the bulb's neck is 3) a small, efficient, oscillating cathode tube which sends a slim beam of electrons weaving over the light-sensitive particles on the mica...

...getting into the "next big industry": air conditioning equipment. Dr. Robert G. Guthrie, chief metallurgist of the Chicago utility, announced the invention of a new chemical compound which he calls "lamisilite." "Lamisilite" is a silicate like silica gel (which certain new air conditioners use), quartz, opal, beryl, tourmaline, garnet, mica. Like silica gel, the new material is highly hygroscopic- absorbs moisture, dehumidifies air. The mother ore of "lamisilite" is a trade secret. Victor Chemical Co., who will make the material for the gas-operated conditioners, knows of large deposits in North and Central America, some in South America, Central Europe...

...ingenious young men.) Their machine consists essentially of a tesla coil under oil and a cascading cathode tube. The coil builds up an electrical potential to 3,000,000 volts. That enormous power is suddenly dumped into what is basically a series of X-ray tubes ending in a mica window...
