Michael gives the case history of a 28-year-old man who was a spectacular example of the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (named for the French doctor who outlined the symptoms in 1885). The patient developed a tic at the age of seven, was an accomplished curser at 13, when even the reading of Tom Sawyer would set him off on a string of oaths. When he entered the British army at 18, he unaccountably stopped swearing, nevertheless managed to make sergeant...

...improbably help speed them on their way. On their trail, Kelly and Barbara feud continuously over whose child is the culpable genius of the escape. At one point the young refugees, trapped amidst some NATO ground maneuvers, totally thwart the efforts of a pushbutton general (hammishly caricatured by Michael Redgrave) to pinpoint them, even outwit his dread Operation Meatloaf ("Not intended for use until the Red army is actually in Trafalgar Square"). Amusing except when it pleads ponderously for international understanding, The Happy Road eventually reunites everybody in Paris, hints that Gene and Barbara will henceforth travel on the family...

...Michael Lewis' performance as the Duke of Kent, Edward's brother, was well-done, of course. I do think he was a bit poorly cast for the part, for one cannot help comparing his huge frame and towering figure with the quite smaller proportions of his kingly brother and wondering about their parentage...
