...culture come together once again, this time on a giant canvas of JERRY HALL. Painter Lucian Freud, who has turned down offers to paint Queen Elizabeth and Pope John Paul II (and has had one of his pieces sold at auction for $5.8 million), painted the statuesque wife of MICK JAGGER. Best known for disturbing portraits of fleshy naked women, Sigmund's grandson shows the leggy Texan both pregnant and with her then infant son. The paintings will be premiered at London's Tate Gallery on Wednesday...
...powerful subject matter aside, there are a number of marvelous moments in the film. The opening sequence, which captures the sensual decadence of a gay Berlin cabaret of the 1930s, is almost worth the admission price by itself. Titillating and visually gorgeous, it's heightened by an unexpected cameo: Mick Jagger, startlingly in his element as nightclub owner Greta (a.k.a. George), performs a throaty torch song in full drag whilst suspended on a platform from the ceiling, in a menacingly campy turn disturbingly reminiscent of Tim Curry as Frank N. Furter...
...Mick Spence's marvelous set is thoroughly grounded in the modern world. A tattered carpet and ratty furniture, well-worn books and food wrapped in aluminum foil surround the actors and evoke a well-kept but obviously lived-in living room. The crucial placement of the television sets, necessary for Enda's frequent videotaped posthumous speeches, is well-conceived. The family TV set faces the actors; unobtrusive monitors above either side of the stage broadcast Enda...
That's the thing about Dinosaur Jr.--no matter how old we get, they're still playing the same Seattle style garage sounds that endeared them to our generation back when we were entering puberty. At the same time, though, new pieces like "Mick" and "Alone" put a refreshing spin on the old depressed-and-oppressed-in-America theme...
...Mick," in particular, delivers some amazingly creative guitar work: Mascis as a pop icon is a little bit of a exaggeration, but the song is definitely one of the most melodious in his repertoire. Admittedly, lyrics like "I can't take myself/I'm trying to help somebody else" are nothing that's never been said before, but unless you have the album, you really can't tell what Mascis is saying anyway. Ignorance isn't necessarily bliss, but to a certain extent one has to remember that, with guitar talent like that, coherence is not always a priority...
