WASHINGTON, D.C.: In its best showing in nearly two years, the monthly U.S. trade deficit dropped 13.5 percent in November to $7.06 billion. The deficit with Japan dropped to $4.13 billion, the lowest level since May 1993. U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor credited the drop to continuing Administration efforts to break down trade barriers in Japan's auto industry. "Our exports to Japan are increasing at four times the rate of imports," Kantor said. The deficit has been shrinking steadily since it hit a record $11.39 billion last June. It's good news for a Clinton Administration beset by attacks...
...dose of financial discipline, while the royals have continued to traffic in nonsense and avoid all forms of discipline, especially marital. Their principal activities seem to be making hairdresser appointments, divorcing and shooting grouse. The future CEO of the bunch, Prince Charles, is Goofy already, plus he's got Mickey's ears...
WASHINGTON WAS SHUT down by snow, Congress and the White House were locked in budget combat, and U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor last week was talking about...bananas. Kantor announced a cease-fire in a yearlong imbroglio with banana producers Colombia and Costa Rica. In the past, he said, the two countries had joined with the 12-nation European Union to create trade policies that have hurt American commercial interests. Never mind that few bananas are grown in the U.S. or that only a handful of American jobs was at stake. Forget too that major U.S. producers Del Monte...
...desire to avoid scheduling elections," notes Tokyo bureau chief Edward Desmond. "The bargain was originally to let a Socialist be prime minister; now it's the LDP's turn." Hashimoto has gained popularity and a reputation as a tough negotiator after participating in trade talks with U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor. His main priorities are reenergizing Japan's flagging economy through massive public spending and deregulation. Having served just 18 months, current Prime Minister Tommiichi Murayama attributed his resignation to the strain of the past year's events which included the gas attack on Tokyo's subways and the Kobe...
...SABBATH'S THEATER by Philip Roth (Houghton Mifflin) explores the beginnings of geezerhood (Roth's resolutely obnoxious hero, Mickey Sabbath, is a randy 64) with some of the same comic sexual energy that set readers goggling in Portnoy's Complaint. Sabbath is an ex-puppeteer whose present occupation is perfecting his scabrous personality. As he searches his disorderly past for meaning, largely without success, he is an equal-opportunity boor, richly offensive to women, men, Jews and Gentiles. Yet the result is a brilliantly written character, rampaging through a novel about facing death in a lonely...
