...every salvo from the critics, though, a return round comes from defenders of recombinant DNA research. Bernard Davis, a Harvard Medical School microbiologist, is so sure the new technique is safe that he has publicly offered to drink recombinant DNA. He insists that those who worry about infections are totally ignorant of medicine's long history of safely handling highly contagious bacteria and viruses. Nor, he says, do they understand how difficult it is for a microbe to become pathogenic. He adds: "Those who claim we are letting loose an Andromeda strain are either hysterics or are trying...
...discovery was made not by a man who hunts ordinary bacteria, but by a microbiologist who specializes in leprosy and rickettsial diseases like typhus and spotted fever. The latter are characterized by fever, headaches and general malaise and are caused by bacteria-like microorganisms usually carried by ticks, lice and fleas. But when Dr. Joseph McDade, 36, examined the lung tissue of victims of last summer's outbreak, he found no trace of any rickettsiae...
...knows for sure how the gonococci acquired their disturbing new capability, but University of Washington Microbiologist Stanley Falkow, who in 1975 predicted the emergence of such a strain, thinks that it was through nature's own genetic engineering. He suggests that the gonococci incorporated bits of the master molecule DNA containing the genetic instructions for making the enzyme from other kinds of microbes that already have these genes...
...philosophical three-year-old collie named Graham. Except for Graham, he regards the young as heading into a world far less attractive than the one he grew up in. He also finds many of them hard to talk to. "Every organism, animal as well as human," he writes, citing Microbiologist Rene Dubos, one of his favorite authors, "lives in a private world of his own to which no one else has complete access. It is like the Old and the Young...
This book attempts the impossible -but then again, that is the author's trademark. It was Microbiologist Commoner who most convincingly alerted Americans to the environmental crisis (TIME cover, Feb. 2, 1970). It was also Commoner who first suggested-in his 1971 bestseller The Closing Circle-that U.S. industry be restructured to conform to ecology's unbending laws. Specifically, he recommended that polluting products (detergents, for example, or synthetic textiles) be replaced by good old natural ones (soap, or cotton and wool). Just how to accomplish such a major switch in industrial direction Commoner...
