...give his project the broadest scope, Hartmann chose artists with differing styles. Some were pure abstractionists, others were from the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Each was asked to bring a recent painting or drawing into the studio for the five-hour trip; after the 100-microgram dose began to take effect, each was asked to center his attention on the subject of the work he brought...
...first isolated the killer. The substance, they said, was a bug-paralyzing insecticide called endosulvan and marketed as Thiodan. A sulfurous acid ester, endosulvan is described by its manufacturers, the Hochst chemical works just west of Frankfurt, as harmless to warm-blooded animals, including humans, even though one microgram (less than one three-millionth of an ounce) in a quart of water is enough to kill coldblooded fish...
Czechoslovak scientists have now developed a technique for using hormone-like chemicals to attack one species of bug at a time. Working with DMF, a synthesized chemical compound that acts like a juvenile hormone, a Prague team under Biologist Karel Sláma discovered that it took just one microgram (a millionth of a gram) to sterilize for life a female linden-bug. They also found that a dose as much as 10,000 times the amount of DMF required to produce sterility would cause no other harmful effects. So they figured that a male linden-bug treated with...
Sterilization in All. To test their premise, the Czechs dripped solutions containing 1, 10 and 100 micrograms of DMF on three groups of ten male linden-bugs, then placed each group in a separate container with ten normal females. As the bugs mated, eggs laid by the females were carefully watched. None of those from females confined with males treated with 100 micrograms of DMF ever hatched. Few eggs from the 10-microgram group and only half from the 1-microgram group eventually hatched into larvae. Analysis of the females that had mated with the 100-microgram males proved that...
...Together. Not that The Haight-Ashbury Utopia needs any new source of supply. Narcotics arrests in the district last year more than trebled (from 148 in 1965 to 485 in 1966). A "lid" (22 grams) of marijuana sells for $10 (v. $25 in New York City) and a 100 microgram "tab" of LSD can be had for $4. Some pot peddlers even pass out supermarket-style trading stamps with each purchase. Apart from narcotics arrests, however, the crime rate shows no drastic escalation. During a January "Human Be-In" at Golden Gate Park, 10,000 hippies turned out to sing...
