...Police Department chief William Bratton was stepping down, less than halfway through his second term, to take a job in the private sector. Even Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who Bratton has partnered with so successfully to lower the city's crime rate, only learned of Bratton's plans during a midnight phone call the day before the formal announcement. Bratton explained that he had actually made the decision several weeks before and had planned to tell the mayor at a meeting on Wednesday; but, he says the Los Angeles Times forced his hand. An unnamed source had told the newspaper about...

...weeks of release. Hoping lightning would strike twice, but without the annoying critical thunder, Paramount showed G.I. Joe, which it hopes will be the first in a lucrative series, only to a few reliable bloggers. Less docile scribes like me had to catch a public screening last night at midnight. And then there's the new generation of fans who, rather than having to wait years to find out what happens next...

First, political sainthood is a gift from heaven with a Cinderella deadline - once past midnight, you are a pumpkin. Second, personal virtues are never a guarantee of effective or successful governance. What was truly shocking about Aquino's tumultuous six-year term as President of the Philippines was that those maxims proved untrue. Midnight always threatened Aquino but never struck; and she was a good woman whose goodness alone, at the very end, was what proved enough, if only by an iota...

Half-Blood began by breaking The Dark Knight's Tuesday-midnight-screenings record ($22.2 million to $18.5 million), then from Wednesday through Saturday calmed down and notched daily grosses in the mid-$20 millions. It will finish Sunday night with the year's second highest opening frame, after Transformers 2. Over the five days, Half-Blood Prince didn't come near Revenge of the Fallen's opening $200 million bonanza. But in North America, at least, HP6 may have been seen by nearly as many people; they're just not paying as much to see it. As Nikki Finke notes...
