...insidious music aside, Sweet Smell remains an often entrancing depiction of a man’s descent into indulgent luxury and moral bankruptcy. A number of remarkable scenes have been constructed, including a chilling midnight meeting between J.J. and Sidney at St. Patrick’s Cathedral that reveals the terrifyingly fierce will of the famed gossip columnist...
...Literally "touch the heart," the delicate dump-lings and scrumptious small dishes are a hallmark of Chinese food from New Jersey to New Delhi to their origins in Guangzhou. Specialized chefs train for decades in their preparation, and Cantonese gobble them up with almost ritualistic reverence from morning to midnight...
...Brother's; the film will soon reveal what sort of a big brother he is. Under the opening credits, Elmer Bernstein score blares confidently (though in truth it sounds like leavings from his terrific work on "The Man With the Golden Arm" two years before). The glimpses of midtown midnight Manhattan under the credits put me in mind of a Henry Hook cryptic crossword-puzzle clue - "shining silver trash" - for which the answer is "aglitter" (silver = AG; trash = litter); the movie gleams like a diamond trying to pass itself off as a rhinestone. The orchestra does not play a large role in the piece, and when it does enter the forest of birds it serves as an indicator of the timbre...

An hour later, waiters at the cafe wrestled a suicide bomber to the ground before he could detonate his explosives. Then at midnight, two Israeli tanks and a bulldozer pulled up on the road between Bethlehem and Deheisha refugee camp outside the home of our Palestinian affairs correspondent, Jamil Hamad. The bulldozer carved a trench seven feet deep across the road, right to Jamil's front step. It also busted through water pipes...
